Journal indexing

Description

Journal indexing allows publications to be found on search tools/databases. Each database might have different criteria of inclusion.

PMC

PubMed Central (PMC) is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences publications.
» PMC
» PMC publisher portal questions
To be indexed in PMC:
  • The journal must have a properly registered ISSN (i.e., a confirmed record for the journal in the official Register of the ISSN International Centre).
  • The journal must be able to provide NLM (the National Library of Medicine, NIH) with immediate access to the content at a publisher or third-party site, as required by NLM's Electronic Resources policy.
  • A minimum of 25 peer-reviewed articles (e.g., original research or review articles, clinical case reports) must be published in final form.
  • The journal must meet PMC's language guidelines.

MEDLINE

MEDLINE is a database for publications in the life sciences/biomedical area.
» MEDLINE
To be included on MEDLINE:
  • The journal must meet the requirements of the NLM collection, as described in the NLM (the National Library of Medicine, NIH) Collection Development Guidelines.
  • Journals must be able to provide XML-tagged citation and abstract data, as described in the PubMed XML guide.
  • Article titles and abstracts should be in English.
  • Journals must have a registered ISSN. This means that there must be a confirmed record for the journal in the official Register of the ISSN International Centre. If multiple publication formats of the journal exist (i.e. print and electronic), each should have its own separate ISSN.
  • The journal should have been published for at least 12 months.
  • The journal should have published a total of at least 40 primary articles (i.e. articles that have been peer-reviewed, usually original research, reviews, or case reports).
  • Journals that have been reviewed for PMC within the last two years and were not found to meet PMC’s scientific quality standard are not eligible for MEDLINE.

PubMed

To be listed in PubMed, the journal must first be included in PubMed Central (PMC) or MEDLINE.

Clarivate Analytics

Clarivate Analytics (former part of Thomson Reuters) maintains the Web of Science (former Web of Knowledge), a citation database, and the Journal Citation Reports, which is used as the basis to define a journal impact factor.
» Web of Science and Web of Science journal evaluation process and criteria
» Journal Citation Reports
» Clarivate Analytics
The initial triage for a journal to be included on the Web of Science follows these criteria:
  • The journal must have a registered ISSN that is verifiable on the ISSN database and is clearly and consistently displayed on all journal platforms (electronic and/or print). If both print and electronic ISSNs are present both should be provided.
  • The journal must have a distinct title that is aligned with the registered ISSN, the journal’s stated scope, published content, and community demographic (editorial board and authors). The title should be consistently displayed at the article, issue (if present), journal, and website level.
  • The publisher name must be clearly defined, and a verifiable, physical address (not P.O. Box) for the publisher’s business offices must be provided. If there is a society affiliation or ownership, this should be stated, and verifiable contact information must be provided.
  • Where both online and print editions are available, it is mandatory to provide the journal URL and full-text access details of current content.
  • The Web of Science must have full access to the published content with all necessary permissions to view that content. The Web of Science will provide IP ranges if needed.
  • The journal must provide a readily accessible, clear statement of the commitment to peer-review and/or editorial oversight of all published content. Primary research articles must be subject to external peer review.
  • Contact details for the submitted journal’s primary editorial and production roles must be provided to allow direct communication between the Web of Science and the journal staff.
  • There is no embargo period for re-submission if a journal does not pass initial triage.
