Questions as to whether alterations in myocardial metabolism (both in health and disease) have a mitochondrial correlate have been raised by many researchers. Thus, generation of a repository for storage of cardiac muscle respirometry data would definitely be useful, not only for providing reference values, but also for recommendations of the optimal protocol for investigation of the topic under investigation. A template for registration of respirometry data was sent out to the MitoEAGLE members in June 2017, but so far very few researcher have responded to the invitation. At this stage, therefore, we are not able to come up with reference values for cardiomyocyte respiration, and the approach chosen for skeletal muscle respiration, namely to invite various labs to perform pilot experiments, which hopefully will demonstrate low inter-laboratory variability and allow for calculation of reference values, seems less realistic for cardiac muscle. An alternative will therefore be to perform a literature search, collecting relevant cardiac respiratory data for a review paper, which could serve as a basis for recommendations of SOPs and, hopefully, also could provide reference values for cardiomyocyte respiration in different cardiac preparations. During the upcoming WG2 session in Hradec Kralove we will discuss strategies for reaching this goal, probably by initially organizing the data according to various pathological conditions, such as heart failure, hypoxia, diabetes/obesity, as well as to physiological responses to different forms of exercise.
