  • Angelo Azzi, Professor emeritus, Faculty Member School of Graduate Biomedical Pharmacology and Drug Development Program
Scientific discovery: “I could talk about scientific discoveries that were initially met with skepticism, such as Alfred Wegener's proposal of the theory of continental drift, Semmelweis and handwashing, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren with peptic ulcer, all the way to Quantum Mechanics and Albert Einstein's famous statement, ’God does not play dice with the universe’, and the continued expansion of the universe.” These examples fit with the initially aggressive skepticism in bioenergetics against Peter Mitchell’s innovative chemiosmotic theory.

  • Gianluca M Farinola, Professor of Organic Chemistry, Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro Bari, IT

EBEC Science Communication - publishers and publishing, science and teaching, dissemination and social media, sustainable conferences

  • Paolo Bernardi, Member of the editorial boards of Biochimica et Biophysica Acta Bioenergetics (since 1999), Pharmacological Research, Current Opinion in Physiology, Current Research in Physiology, Life Metabolism, Mitochondrial Communications; served for 18 years in The Journal of Biological Chemistry, for 9 years in Frontiers of Physiology, and for 5 years in Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics and IUBMB Life, Editor-in-Chief of the Mitochondria Section of Cells
From membrane probes to cytochrome c release: “I have two specific and connected issues in mind, i.e. the incorrect use of membrane potential probes in the 1990s, which generated an epidemics of artifacts; and a few high profile mistakes in the debate about the bioenergetics consequences of cytochrome c release. No journal is immune from the problem of ambiguity. Thus, I think that the discussion should be kept as general as possible.”
Cleaning up the scientific record: "Whether academic decency will prevail in our brave new world, or we succumb to senseless overproduction of irrelevant or erroneous papers, is the main challenge that will define future academic progress." (ref 1)
Addressing the ambiguity crisis: “The dissemination of scientific disinformation from peer-reviewed literature infiltrates textbooks, educational platforms, and social media. Is there an erosion of public trust in science? Countering disinformation demands a strategy that raises 'awareness of the inherent ambiguity crisis, complementing efforts to address the well-acknowledged issues of credibility and reproducibility'." The unifying theme of EBEC

Sir John E Walker at MiPsummer 2012, UK
Bookmark EBEC2024 with shadow.png
The central unifying theme of EBEC is Bioenergetics and by extension, chemiosmosis. Thus, essential topics for consideration for inclusion in the programme are oxidative phosphorylation in bacteria and mitochondria, photosynthesis, transmembrane transport of metabolites and other small molecules, passage of proteins through membrane barriers, bacterial motility and cell death via apoptosis and other mechanisms involving the mitochondria. As you are aware, in recent years great strides forward in understanding have been made in most of these fields. Thus, we recommend that these topics should provide the core of the programme. That is not to say that related topics such as mitochondrial diseases arising from mutations in both mt-DNA and nuclear genes, involvement of mitochondria in ageing and cancer and related medical issues should be excluded.
With best wishes,
John, Bob, Marten, and Peter

Austrian Bioenergetics Group

2020-01-09: Invitation to join the Austrian Bioenergetics Group
EBEC2024 - the 22nd European Bioenergetics Conference will be held in Innsbruck (2024, Aug 12-17). We would like to bring together Austrian experts in bioenergetics for joining the EBEC2024 National Scientific Committee. This provides an excellent opportunity to establish an Austrian Bioenergetics Group towards and beyond EBEC2024.
As the local organizer of EBEC2024, it is my pleasure to invite you for participation and collaboration to make EBEC2024 in Austria an internationally outstanding success.
EBEC2022 will be held in France.
The first meeting to establish the Austrian Bioenergetics Group was planned to take place in Vienna in 2020 - Bioenergetics Vienna 2020 - but had to be cancelled due to COVID19.
Your ideas and input are welcome. I am looking forward to hearing from you,
