Description
Mammalian superoxide dismutase (SOD) exists in three forms, of which the Mn-SOD occurs in mitochondria (mtSOD, SOD2; 93 kD homotetramer) and many bacteria, in contrast to the Cu-Zn forms of SOD (cytosolic SOD1, extracellular SOD3 anchored to the extracellular matrix and cell surface). Superoxide anion (O2•-) is a major reactive oxygen species (ROS) which is dismutated by SOD to oxygen and H2O2.

Application in fluorometry
- Add SOD for conversion of O2•- and measurement of H2O2 with Amplex Red.
SOD: Superoxide Dismutase from bovine liver, Sigma S8409, 15 KU, store at -20°C; MW = 32.000,00 g/mol
Preparation of 5000U/ml stock solution (dissolved in H2O):
- 1) Weigh 2 mg of Superoxide dismutase
- 2) Dissolve in 1134µl H2O
- 3) Divide into 30µl portions into 0.2 ml eppendorf tubes
- 4) Store frozen at -20°C in the Desiccator
