:::: In my view, we have experienced a revolution in the last 20 years in the scientific publication landscape as a consequence of the implementation of open access (OA) policies. In this new paradigm, readers now have broad and unrestricted access to scientific articles at no cost. However, the fastest-growing model of OA publishing (the golden route) transfers the costs from readers to scientists who produce the knowledge. The fees charged for publication in golden OA journals, the author publishing charges (APC), are in general expensive and have increased well above the inflation in the US and Europe in the last ten years.
:::: There are several points to discuss on the future of BEC but I think the main one is which model of publishing should we adopt to be scientifically rigorous, but, at the same time, sustainable, fair, and inclusive for the bioenergeticists community? In this regard, we should be sensitive to the huge community of bioenergeticists around the world that are under enormous pressure to maintain their laboratories active and in many countries with very limited resources and financial support. Take the reality of African scientists where an average APC value is equivalent to half-year of a scholar's salary or that in many Latin American countries where despite having no robust scientific funding scientists are not allowed to request waivers and discounts because their countries are considered too rich to be eligible (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02173-7;  https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00864-3). Thus, in most of the southern hemisphere countries, the funding mechanisms are not robust enough in a way that scientists are not affluent enough to fund their research and support the covering of very expensive APC. Considering the rapid and profound changes in the scientific publishing landscape implemented by the Plan S initiative (started effectively in January 2021) this will basically separate the scientists that produce new knowledge (the North) from those that consume it (the South) (https://direct.mit.edu/qss/article/2/4/1123/107612/Assessing-the-effect-of-article-processing-charges).
:::: As long as BEC is financially sustained by Oroboros, the Diamond OA route is possible desirable, but I strongly suspect that this would not be sustainable in the long term. In this sense, I think sooner or later, BEC will be forced to shift from the Diamond to Golden OA route. I don't see a problem in itself on the golden OA route, but IÂŽm a vocal critic against the commercial exploitation that the giant publishers (Springer, Elsevier, and so on) that are being pushed by them through the Plan S initiative. Therefore, I think that BEC should take the lead as an OA journal to be sensitive to the heterogeneity of funding systems and implement clear actions to allow the publication of papers originating from countries established by the World Bank as low, middle, and upper-middle-income economies. Objectively, this would mean that BEC should establish clear policies to cap APC at reasonable values (letÂŽs say ~ USD 500 per paper) and define clear policies for pricing discounts and waivers, especially considering the complexity of the funding mechanisms around the world. This would place BEC in a vanguard position fueling a virtual cycle that will maintain its financial health but at the same time will allow the inclusion of scientific knowledge from all over the world.
:::: I truly hope that BEC should continue as a Diamond OA journal, but if it reaches a point that compromises its own financial existence, then a shift towards the Golden OA route is the way. However, in such a case, the sensitive issues pointed out above should be included, as a genuine act of the Gentle Science spirit, representing a milestone for a fairer, more affordable, and inclusive environment of scientific publishing free from market forces.

Also being indexed serves to increase publicity and visibility of the journal.

Discussion: The future of BEC

Join the discussion and contribute to a coauthored BEC editorial: BEC is the future.
  • The lockdown phase was a bad timing for starting BEC, since it separated us by preventing real life meetings from happening. Bioblast 2022 is a re-start: We discuss the future of BEC [1].
  • In advance, write to us and define the text to be posted in this discussion page under your name. Consider this as the initiation of a jointly published BEC editorial.

Some first thoughts
I do like the idea of defining a better model for publishing. There is much to consider. Apart from cost of publication which for some journals is clearly excessive, there is a need to consider the workload of the research community. Agreeing to review a manuscript through to the publication point can be a lengthy and time-consuming process. more and more it is becoming difficult to find a wide community of invested reviewers.
Also, I do think people place more value on things that they have paid for (whether this is the right way to view things is a subject for elsewhere). Perhaps a reasonable fee is levied for each publication. This can be waived/traded, if the authors agree to review say 2-3 manuscripts within a certain amount of time. The reviewers can therefore feel they have been compensated for the time they spend. Researchers with more restricted funds still get to publish their high quality manuscripts.

In my view, we have experienced a revolution in the last 20 years in the scientific publication landscape as a consequence of the implementation of open access (OA) policies. In this new paradigm, readers now have broad and unrestricted access to scientific articles at no cost. However, the fastest-growing model of OA publishing (the golden route) transfers the costs from readers to scientists who produce the knowledge. BEC strategies

  1. Beyond Gold Open Access - how can it be sustained?
    1. Definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_access#Gold_OA
    2. BEC aims at 'Diamond Open Access' (Marcus F Oliveira) without article processing charge — free for authors and readers.
    3. This is presently financed by Oroboros Instruments as a service to science.
    4. This model may be sustained by defining an upper limit of manuscripts processed per year, in line with a strategy beyond counting papers [2]. With increasing numbers of submissions, the editors have to take decisions on accepting manuscripts for peer-review. Pre-publication peer review of MitoFit Preprints may play an increasing role in selecting preprints for BEC peer-review.
  2. Editors of topical series
    1. The number of manuscripts per year may be extended, if volunteering editors take responsibility of guiding the publication of topical series.
    2. Series may be linked to a specific event with a defined timeline.
    3. Series may be linked to a specific topic with an open timeline.
