Human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK 293) cells are derived from human embryonic kidney cells. They are easy to culture in suspension in serum-free media. HEK have many properties of immature neurons, suggesting that the adenovirus was taken up and transformed a neuronal lineage cell in the original kidney culture. HEK 293 cells should not be used as an in vitro model for kidney cell function or studies involving kidney cells.
