My research primarily focuses on exploring mechanisms linking dysregulation of lipid metabolism to pre-diabetes and diabetes. Chief among these are the potential role of aberrant mitochondrial and peroxisomal function contributing to the development of lipid-induced insulin resistance. Currently my laboratory assesses mitochondrial function by protein/gene expression, enzymatic activity, direct measurement of substrate metabolism using radiolabeled tracer technology, and metabolomic/lipidomic profiling. The OROBOROS O2k ISE Multisensor System will greatly increase our ability to comprehensively test mitochondrial function which is anticipated to not only strengthen results obtained from our studies, but also provide novel insight that will guide future experimental exploration.
