There is the possibility to avoid that you pay import tax again (as you have paid that when first imported), when the instrument is being returned to your home country. This is a little bit of paperwork, but still might we worth while. If you would like to do so, then you would have to ask your carrier to issue an export/import certificate (this allows a tax free import/export from your home country to Austria and vice versa within a certain time).  Please also contact your shipping agent for any specific rules applying to „shipping for repairs“ from your home country to the European Union and''' make extra sure that they (the carrier) arranged all the necessary paperwork for tax-free re-import before actually shipping the instrument!'''

'''Update June 2011:''' At the moment only DHL but not UPS or FedEX are offering this service for customers in the US.

(3) Sending the O2k: Important instructions for customs to allow a tax free import/export from your home country to Austria and vice versa within a certain time: Please instruct your courier that this is a repair shipment, thus a temporary export/import (you will probably need to provide a proforma invoice stating: „goods for repair only – will be returned“). Further instruct them to ship the goods as „dutiable goods“, to the following address:
(4) Value of goods:
The customs declaration value of the instrument for the customs should be declared as Euro 5000,- (or equivalent in your currency).
(5) Courier
If your institution has a customer account at a courier, it is best to use this one.
If an import certificate had been issued, we are obliged to use the same carrier as you did, meaning we can't use our own carrier.  Therefore the return shipment would have to be charged to your account at the courier.

(6) Shipping the O2k: Ship the O2k to our office:
