Human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK 293) cells are derived from human embryonic kidney cells. They are easy to culture in suspension in serum-free media. HEK have many properties of immature neurons, suggesting that the adenovirus was taken up and transformed a neuronal lineage cell in the original kidney culture. HEK 293 cells should not be used as an in vitro model for kidney cell function or studies involving kidney cells. ยป mRNA detected in 293 cells normally expressed specifically in neuronal cells
